Building evacuation plays a vital role in emergency situations such as fires, earthquakes, or other disasters. It is crucial to acknowledge that individuals with disabilities encounter distinctive obstacles during high-rise evacuations, necessitating specific considerations and accommodations. 

To ensure the safe evacuation of people with disabilities from high-rise buildings, as well as any other building during emergencies, a comprehensive approach is indispensable. This approach aims to enhance the overall egress process and address the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

About the presenter 

Hank Van Ravenstein
Principal, LCI Consultants

Hank is the Principal at LCI Consultants, managing the Building Surveying and Disability Access Team. With a strong background as a registered and Chartered building surveyor, and a qualified access consultant. He has successfully managed several comprehensive policies and frameworks, notably for the Victorian Departments of Health and Families, Fairness, and Housing, which includes the Capital Development Guidelines, Series 7 - Fire Risk Management and Fire and Emergency Preparedness, Response Procedures, and Training Framework. Hank's contributions significantly to the field through his publications, addressing disability access in fire safety, bushfires, and hospital fire safety. He actively engages in Australian Standard committees, advancing industry standards and best practices.
