APEC Engineer and International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA)

Engineers Australia is a participant in the International Engineering Alliance, comprising of engineering organisations and government agencies that have implemented agreements of substantial equivalence such as the APEC Engineering Agreement and the International Professional Engineer Agreement. The APEC Engineer Register is an initiative of the Commonwealth Department of Education Science and Training (formerly DETYA) and Engineers Australia to facilitate cross-border mobility for professional engineers in the APEC Region.

Australian registrants on the APEC Engineer register and the International Professional Engineers Agreement register, are entitled to use the postnominal APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus). The eligibility criteria for registration are:

  1. Successful completion of a Washington Accord qualification or equivalent
  2. Assessment by Engineers Australia as eligible for Chartered status
  3. A minimum of seven years practical experience since graduation
  4. At least two years in responsible charge of significant engineering work
  5. Maintenance of continuing professional development at a satisfactory level.

Agreement for International Engineering Technicians (AIET)

Engineering Technicians is the title used outside Australia for Engineering Associates. Australian registrants on the Agreement for International Engineering Technicians register are entitled to use the postnominal IntETn(Aus). Similar registers are being established in the UK, Ireland, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. The eligibility criteria for registration are:

  1. Successful completion of Dublin Accord qualification or equivalent
  2. Assessment by Engineers Australia as eligible for Chartered status
  3. A minimum of five years practical experience
  4. At least one year post graduate experience
  5. Maintenance of continuing professional development at a satisfactory level.

International Engineering Technologists Agreement (IETA)

The International Engineering Technologists Agreement (IETA) is to facilitate mobility of Engineering Technologists. Engineers Australia is currently applying for full membership of this Agreement. The eligibility criteria are:

  • Successful completion of a Sydney Accord qualification or equivalent
  • Assessment by Engineers Australia as eligible for Chartered status
  • A minimum of seven years practical experience since graduation
  • At least two years in responsible charge of significant engineering technologist work
  • Maintenance of continuing professional development at a satisfactory level
