$2 billion to be invested in northwest Melbourne Thursday, 20 March 2014

The Victorian government has revealed a framework plan for the urban renewal of the suburbs of Airport West and Essendon Fields in Melbourne’s northwest, as well as a job precinct focusing on aviation services, research and development, office space and retail. It will potentially deliver 25,000 new jobs and attract over $2 billion in investment.

Minister for planning Matthew Guy said the partnership between the Metropolitan Planning Authority, Essendon Fields and Moonee Valley City Council would deliver a framework to build on an existing base of 9000 jobs and more than 630 businesses within the precinct.

“The Essendon Airport area has now been identified in Plan Melbourne as a key transport gateway and importantly as a significant opportunity to create new jobs in the suburbs,” Guy said.

Several development projects have been identified in early planning including a $30 million, 150 room hotel and conference centre; an $80 million extension of the AutoCentro car retail hub; construction of additional hangars and aviation facilities, and an additional 150,000m2 of office space.
