In Command of Your Career Friday, 29 March 2019

Taking command and elevating your career isn’t a secret formula but sometimes it can be difficult to navigate your way through the sea of information, responsibilities and constant knowledge downloads of everyday life. If that isn’t enough to make you break out in a sweat, add in to your calculations that you’ve recently graduated! It’s exciting, it’s overwhelming and we completely understand.

In Command of Your Career is a four-part series aimed at highlighting and developing significant aspects of your career:

  • Session One: Effective Communication
  • Session Two: Negotiation and Influence
  • Session Three: Nailing Your Presentation
  • Session Four: Effective Communication

Each interactive session is hosted by an influential Northern Territory engineering leader, aimed at building upon graduate knowledge within the engineering industry.

On 11 March, Session One: Effective Communication took place with 2018 Young Professional Engineer of the Year, Paul Brandis (Byrne Consultants). From the very moment participants walked through the doors, unbeknownst to them, their interactions and communication techniques were being closely examined by Paul.

Paul began by saying “We have all been communicating since the moment we were born. But taking the time to reflect on ‘why’ we communicate is often overlooked or taken for granted.”

This was the start of an interactive session with participants engaging in strategic activities formulated to understand ‘why’ we engage in communication within an engineering context and how to communicate with purpose to achieve successful outcomes.

“[In Command of Your Career] is part of a new initiative… we had a great turnout of enthusiastic future engineering leaders,” said Paul. “I think the series is a great initiative.”

Mark Monaghan, General Manager of Engineers Australia Northern, mentioned, “We have received terrific feedback and are excited to see the continued impact of future sessions.”

Session Two: Negotiation and Influence (13 May) will be presented by Engineers Australia Fellow and well-respected leader, David Sidie whose expertise lies in civil design, project management, feasibility studies, contract administration and site supervision of civil projects throughout the Northern Territory.

All engineering students and graduates are invited to join. Register now as spaces are limited.
