Investing in assets and creating local jobs
Piling works, headstocks, and deck unit installation on the new riverwalk are now complete, and works are well advanced on the concrete deck slabs. With works tracking ahead of schedule, it is anticipated construction will be complete by mid-2021, weather permitting.
Brisbane City Council is investing $40 million in the 2020-21 financial year in this key asset for Brisbane’s west, with a total investment of $58 million expected over the life of the project. Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said infrastructure investment is one way Council is bolstering the construction sector to create and support jobs as we recover from the economic impact of coronavirus.
“Indooroopilly Riverwalk is generating up to 60 new jobs on-site, with additional jobs created throughout the supply chain for the duration of the project. This means local jobs created for engineers, construction workers, plant operators, site administrators, traffic controllers, cleaners and supervisors.” Cr Schrinner said.
Council is also locally sourcing materials as much as possible, creating a positive flow-on effect for producers of quarry materials, pre-mixed concrete, reinforcing steel, stormwater pipes, and formwork. Locally-sourced materials include precast deck units from Bromelton, pile liners from Wacol, fabricated steel handrails from Toowoomba, piling from Clontarf, and electrical from Loganlea.
Building more for our city
Indooroopilly Riverwalk is just one city-shaping project moving ahead as part of Council's multi-million infrastructure program for 2021.
“The new Howard Smith Wharves and South Bank ferry terminals will be accommodating patrons from the end of the year, giving people more options to commute and explore.
Choosing water travel will be even easier, with two new, Brisbane-built double-decker CityCats hitting the water in 2021. These three river-based projects alone have kept 170 people working,” Cr Schrinner said.
Other projects underway include the transformation of Victoria Park, construction of Brisbane Metro’s depot in mid-2021, and construction starting on the green bridges at Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Creek by the end of the year. Both bridges will see more than 500 jobs supported between them.
