Registration in Victoria – We asked and the Victorian Government committed Monday, 10 December 2018

During the recent election campaign Engineers Australia ran a media campaign calling for parties to commit to mandatory registration for engineers working in Victoria. As a direct result of the campaign, the Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas met with Engineers Australia CEO Peter McIntyre and committed to reintroduce the Engineers Registration Bill as a priority. This pledge was communicated to our members via Facebook and LinkedIn.

Mr McIntyre urged the Treasurer to consider another review of the legislation to ensure it aligns with the needs of the broad community and engineering profession. Engineers Australia is committed to representing members to ensure that the legislation and subsequent regulations are in the best interests of the profession.

A registration system will ensure that engineers working in Victoria or on state projects will have a recognised engineering qualification; at least five years of experience in their area of practice; and an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development. Importantly, they will be guided by a Code of Ethics that defines the values and principles that shape their decisions in engineering practice.

Victoria is in the midst of an infrastructure boom, supported by an unprecedented level of investment. Engineers Australia remains steadfast in its belief that what underpins the success of these projects is the engineers charged with their delivery.

Engineers Australia looks forward to the introduction of registration in Victoria to benefit the broader community, lift the profession’s standing and move engineering to the centre of decision making.
